Hi Guys,

Not your usual blog this week after I deserted you to watch the international at Twickenham, however I would like to thank all the lads that travelled to Fleetwood in my absence. The score was irrelevant as last year we travelled with 13 to this fixture, so we have improved immensely since then already. And listening to all the accounts it looks as though Fleetwood singled this game out as a must win and stacked their side slightly. No matter what, the main things are we didn't allow them to have it all their way and managed to score a try ourselves ensuring we still haven't been nilled this season. We will put this down to experience and build again from the good points, we have a good spirit growing and must be deemed a tough side to play if every team we come across have to add the odd ringer.
This week we welcome our old rivals Kirby Lonsdale to Ramsgreave, a perfect opportunity to bounce straight back from this set back. I have been told that discipline at Fleetwood was good and expect the same this weekend at home. Our discipline is a embarrassment at times and always detracts from the good stuff we are doing on the field, it also puts us under unnecessary pressure. Its like we try to beat ourselves some times, with stupid penalty's and back chatting the referee. We must work hard not to our discipline destroy the good spirit of Blackburn third team.
As you all know I have arranged the Christmas Cracker, and all the lads who intend to attend should see me on Saturday to sort out your menu choices and pay me the £18 cover per head. I am looking forward to a good game this week and hopefully if we perform as we can a good win. Lets get numbers to training on Thursday just to iron out an wrinkles we have and give ourselves the best opportunity to win.

Cup win for mighty thirds

Rugby date 6/11/10 Raging Bull Shield home against Sefton Score 22-3

Hi Guys,

Well we got our cup run off to a great start yesterday with a convincing win over our visitors Sefton, who travelled with 15 players and made a good game of it. There are some issues though that we still need to work on, we got off to a flyer with Adam (Ollie) Alstead going over for his first try this season after 4 minuets. But we found ourselves under pressure from the ref's whistle due to our indiscipline, with a narrow lead we constantly found the shrill blast of whistle going against us. In times like these we seem to fall apart instead of pulling together, and give more needless penalty's away and end up suffering cards.
Our discipline has been good for the last few games, and it was frustrating to see ourselves fall back in to old habits. As your captain it is my job to control my team and players for the 80 minuets we are on the field, the referee says control your men and I felt disappointed that I couldn't do that yesterday. We have to learn from our mistakes yesterday, I don't want a shift in the commitment shown but we must start listening to the ref and your captain. When I say one voice it is mine I want I will then ask for other opinions, but when I ask all to concentrate and cut the silly penalty's and the back chat, that is what I want. We managed to hold on to our lead and increase it, also putting up a superb defensive performance to withhold Sefton and all that they threw at us. But we will end up loosing games if we continue to perform so poorly in our discipline.
There are a few tactical points we still need to work on, mainly around the tackle area. As a team we are not hitting the ruck convincingly, we have drive through the ruck taking out the opposition players. Not standing out and not leaning on, what I want first and foremost is the ball secure and a platform for our scrum half. Its no good not competing at the breakdown and leaving our scrum half struggling to get the ball away. P.G. Will work on these points on a Thursday night at training, 7pm till 9pm lets keep up the hard work we have been doing at training and continue to get good numbers down.
Next week we return to our league games, and welcome Tarleton to Ramsgreave , availability please as soon as possible to myself or Keith. When I ask for availability what I am looking for is those players who want to play and are going to be available to let us know, maybe a text or a call and then we will confirm you on Thursday night. It gets frustrating when players say I didn't get a call, we are not physic and don't call every name in the phone book but if you wish to play let us know and you will get a call and a game.
Also next week Andy Snape is having his 21St at the All Blacks club at Lamack, he has made it an open invitation for all third team players supporters and friends. Lets get down and wish him all the best from all his friends in the thirds. I am also going to arrange a Christmas meal for all players and members, and their partners. It will consist of a sit down meal and disco to follow, I feel it will be a good opportunity for us to bring along our other halves and let them meet the lads you spend so much time with. The date I am looking at will be the 11Th of December and cost will be £18 per head. I will send a E mail and post on facebook and pitchero please make this a great evening.

Regards Carlos (captain).

Tough times at Hoppers

Rugby date 30/10/10 away against Preston score 38 - 3

Hi Guys,
well not quite the result I wanted this week however there was some good points to pick up on, main thing even though we where a scratch team the team spirit was high and ran the whole game. There was no falling out no blaming each other we made mistakes and got on with it, playing for each other. Secondly we communicated with each other throughout the game, helping each other and supporting each other. The score was some what flattering towards a good Preston side as they ran in 3 easy scores late into the second half as we ran out of steam. But for the majority of the game we where the dominate side, holding our own in the scrum with only 7 against 8, and Andy Helsdon playing in the forwards for the first time. He did extremely well starting in the front row at loose head, but struggled a bit so big Keith came up into the front and Andy moved into the second row. All in all we performed extremely well right through the team with the help of some young Stoneyhurst boys in the backs and Ollie playing out of his skin it was a shame we didn't convert more of our possession into points. We did however manage to keep a great discipline effort for the whole of the game only giving 2 penalty's the whole game.
The big disappointment was the lack of commitment from some members not giving any notice that they weren't going to turn up, it lets everyone down when you don't turn up and is very frustrating for your team mates. We expect a certain level of commitment from all our members lets not get into bad habits, and lets keep up the level of commitment we have seen at the beginning of the season.
Next week we are at home and welcome Sefton to Ramsgreave in our first cup match of the season, last season they defeated us away at their place in this fixture. The form we have been showing of late is a massive improvement from last season and I am confident that we can pull together and put the disappointment of this week behind us. We will be hoping to put out a strong side and availability as soon as possible please to myself or Keith. Lets work hard on Thursday night at training P.G. tells me that numbers are still good so lets keep up those efforts. After the frustrations of this week it would be great for team morale to put out a strong side and show our visitors just how good we are and why we are worthy of our league position.

Dad's Army win at Ramsgreave

Rugby date 23/10/10 home against Furness 2's score 22-14

Hi Guys,

This was not just any win, but pure nostalgia. With an average age of about 40+ we made a plan and stuck to it, our visitors travelled well and looked a good side with a lot of youth and a sprinkling of older players. We however had some player issues before we kicked off, with only 12 players turning up and Percy on his way. But Charles Page made a dash home for some duds and the 1St xv management allowed our players player from last season, who was on the bench for them this season to start for us. And so with the inclusion of Eddy Holden we managed to start with 15 players on the park. Before the game I spoke about discipline, and our efforts in this department where fantastic. I can only recall giving away 3or 4 penalty's and none in our danger zone. This is a good show of discipline and well done lets keep up the concentration on this issue, it had been a Achilles heel for us at times this season. But it looks as though we are starting to learn from our mistakes.
As I have said we had some player issues before the kick off but a better third team of experienced players I doubt you could find. We new it was going to be a day of heavy toil, but the forwards stuck to there game plan picking and driving when needed and supporting each other at the breakdown. The driving maul was working well and we managed to confine our visitors to their own half for the majority of the game. With total dominance at the scrum and winning the lions share at the lineout we managed to keep Furness on the back foot, not allowing their quick backs any ball to do any damage. Unfortunately Martin Jessop going down with a suspected tear to his calf muscle, left a gap in our second row. But not for long as old timer and team manager Keith Walmsley, strapped on a pair of boots and showed you never loose it, we don't know what it is but Keith gave it plenty. At 50+ this shows superb commitment and dedication to a team he believes in, and I thank him for his efforts.
With all our young lads away with the 2's we had to make some changes to our back line, Eddy stepping in at 10 and Braddy at 9, was like last season and they linked well. But Mike Doc Doherty playing at 12 and Henning at 13 was an inspiration. They brought not only some experience but some understanding to our backline, With Jim Coleman coming in to help out from fullback. We looked the part and played with style when ball was in hand, crossing the game line and keeping the pressure on the Furness defence. To say it was perfect would be big headed but it was pretty close, our fitness looked good and when Furness went uncontested in the scrum and therefore gaining some front foot ball, our defence was strong. With the quick ball Furness where able to release their fast young backs and this put Burn under pressure, but some superb defensive tackling meant we where able to close out the game.
I would like to Thank Gareth Thomas and Dino Radice for showing true club spirit in our moment of need,as Eddy was taken back by the 1's, Henning who had been superb was injured. As it turns out he will need some surgery to a nasty finger injury, this meant we where reduced to 13 and Gareth and Dino both pulled on boots and came to our rescue. Also Andy Toms was ready and willing to take to the field if needed, as I said true club spirit. With their help we managed to close out the game and take a well deserved win. M,O,M for the game was awarded to the whole team who performed magnificently.
Next week we travel to close rivals Preston, this is a game we should be able to win, however as I have said a couple of injuries and a few people unavailable means we will be tight for numbers again. With so many of our younger boys now taking a regular position in the 2nd xv, we will need every man we can get so availability as soon as possible please. Lets not forget training on Thursday night P.G. Is doing some fantastic sessions and the efforts are showing in our fitness and game play. Once again I commend all the lads who put their hearts and souls into this weeks match lets keep building and working hard. Thanks.

Regards Carlos (captain).

Frustration builds for thirds

Rugby date 16/10/10 home against Orrell game conceded

Hi Guys,

Yes the frustration of not getting out on the park this weekend was there for everyone see as the thirds supported their club and roared on the first xv. Disappointed as I was that I had to make the decision to call off the game, with the league been so tough and tight I think I think I made the right choice to stand everyone down for the weekend. With the 2's not travelling to Carlisle due to not been able to raise a side, even though 3 third team players where willing to make the journey for them. The league rules mean that we cannot play our fixture without falling foul of the rules, and not only our side been deducted points but the 2's also. With this in mind I made my decision based on the good of the club, I didn't see any mileage in playing Orrell as a friendly with as I have already said this been a tough league.
And now we look forward to welcoming Furness to Ramsgreave, this coming Saturday. Remembering last season Furness travelled well and brought a young side that got about the park a little better than we did, my memory is that we had them in the tight but once they got the ball they used it well. They will be making along journey and last season travelled by coach, arriving in good spirits. We must take all the frustration from this weekend and channel it into our game, playing as we have done right from the whistle. If the forwards start as they have recently, taking the game to the opponents giving a platform. our backs will deliver. Availability as soon as possible, to myself or Keith and lets get down training on Thursday night in numbers for a good hard session. P.G. has been putting in some excellent work on the training pitch and numbers have been good lets keep this up now as the nights get darker and colder, we feel the benefit on a match day and the tactics we practice are showing in our game. Well done up to now for the effort and as I say lets keep moving in the right direction. Be aware though lads the 2's travel to Burnage and they may need numbers again, I thank all the lads who have stepped up so far and hope that your hard work and effort is appreciated by the 2's as much as it is by the thirds.

Regards Carlos (captain).

Robbers fail to nick it

Rugby date 9/10/10 away against Hutton score 12-10

Hi Guys,

We travelled to Hutton as robbers seeing as they play at Lancashire police headquarters, but came away feeling as though we had been robbed. After yet another great start we managed to dominate the game for the majority of play, phase after phase but unable to convert possession into points. Hutton were superb in their defence as we were when called upon, this resulted in a superb tight game which could of gone either way towards the end. But due to our lack of conversion of supremacy and territory didn't go our way, looking back at the game I feel our inability to change the way we played cost us dear. It was frustrating at the breakdown to see Hutton come up with the ball time and time again, this due mainly to the fitness of our boys not getting there in numbers quick enough. Hutton seemed to have 2 or 3 players in on the tackle before we arrived, when we did arrive we managed to drive through the ball staying on our feet. Something Hutton managed to get away without doing, however we can not blame the referee as was pointed out to me, this is not the Blackburn way and I apologise for my lack of discipline on this matter. The fact is that Hutton took their chances to get back in to the game after the half time break, once again we let the opposition rule the first ten minutes after the break. This is where we keep letting ourselves down, Stuart Rouse commented "that we should turn straight round" not having a break a great idea if only we could. We seem to loose all impetuous after the break one minute we are dominating both set piece and territory, then we have a little chat about upping the effort and not allowing the opposition chance to run at us. Restart and do the opposite not committing to tackle allowing the opponents to get territory and apply pressure on our try line.
We have to work hard on this aspect of the game both physically and mentally, keeping the same intensity after the break is down to hard work and discipline but also the will to get back in to the game straight from the off. Maybe a change in tactics is called for to secure some dominance again instead of receiving the ball and trying to run 60 yards to score a try, lets get it off the park and take control of the set piece allowing us to grow back into the game and dominate territory. We were superb in the line again this week both Doc and Tiny leaping like salmons to secure the majority of lineout ball, both on their throw and ours. However Hutton realising that we were ruling the line changed their tactic and instead of competing concentrated on pulling the maul to the ground. Something the ref seemed to think was legal however what did we do to combat this tactic, nothing because we were winning in the air we hoped the ref would ping Hutton and we could carry on with our game plan. Maybe we should have cut the line and used more ball off the top, we can do this tactic very well however I failed to notice the significance of the lineout tactic employed by Hutton and failed to take control of the situation. Sometimes been as inventive as the opponents is the answer, by cutting the line we put more players into the back line, by playing off the top we get quick ball that Hutton are not challenging and we take away the chance of a turnover with them pulling us to ground.
We also dominated at the scrum winning our own ball and the majority of theirs, however winning the scrum isn't the end of the play we have to move the ball and get over the gain line then compete to retain possession and therefore apply pressure by pinning the opponents in their own half. Scot Foster having a superb game at eight was a big lose when suffering a deep cut to his shin and having to go to hospital, I would like to thank Killion for taking him and Charles and Julia for picking him up on the way home. Also a big thanks to Nige Goulthorpe for stepping in at eight not a position he is used to, although we lost some momentum at the tail of the scrum the other forwards now tiring were not there quick enough to support. Tiny getting MoM for the forwards and Adam 'Ollie' Alstead making his return on the wing picking up MoM for the backs. The backs maybe missing some cohesion with so many players moving up to the 2's, so they could play their game. When given the ball made some great inroads. However the Hutton boys constantly flirting with the offside line which seemed to be a doglegged line across the pitch, where always putting our backs under pressure. Some excellent runs from Jimmy Townes again gaining us position but chances going begging again and again. We have to start to take these chances and putting games away with smarter play at times, getting closer sucking in defences and retaining possession. Something to work on in training, Paul Greenwood is doing a brilliant job on Thursday nights and it is starting to show in our game. There has been superb support at training and I thank everyone again but lets not loose focus, and keep up the effort. Next week we welcome Orrel to Ramsgreave they are the table toppers but not undefeated, I am sure we can put out a side that will do Blackburn thirds proud. Once again it will be a hard game but if we learn from our mistakes this week and take our chances we can deliver, nobody enjoys the pressure we enforce when playing our game and making our tackles and supporting each other lets work hard for one-another and keep or discipline once again. Availability as soon as possible please to either myself or Keith.

Regards Carlos (captain).

Mighty thirds dominate at Ramsgreave

Rugby date 02/10/10 home against Hawcoat park score 24 - 0

Hi Guys,

Well what a performance we put on against league new comers Hawcoat it turns out they are what used to be Vickers old team. They travelled well with a couple of subs on their bench and once again it was a hard game, the visitors played a similar game to us and looked a good team with big forwards and quick backs. But even with the 2nd team stripping us of several players we managed again to field 21 players, this excellent support lads lets keep up the effort now as the bad weather starts to dig in. I would like to thank Paul Greenwood, Andy Snape, John Banks, Tom Holden and Dave O'sullivan for stepping up to assist the 2nd xv. Especially Dave O'sullivan who accepted a late call Saturday morning, and all of them helped to secure a victory for the 2's, well done boys.
Back to the thirds performance as I wrote about last week our discipline would be key in this match, with a old friend to the Blackburn club Sean refereeing the game, we new he would not tolerate any back chat. I gave my pre game talk and urged all the lads to think about their discipline, I spelt out the troubles we had been suffering from. And thankfully all of you managed to maintain an excellent discipline throughout the game, this meant that instead of gifting silly penalty's we managed to maintain pressure on our opponents. And shut out a great win with some superb game play, thanks lads and lets keep up the good work on our discipline.
Another aspect that stood out yesterday was our support play especially Mike Doherty doing some excellent work around the park. Paul Schofield also first to every breakdown closely followed by George Pugh. The backs where working well and linking up effortlessly through Nick Archer and Jim Coleman, Richard Bradford. But also all the players geeing each other on Richard Tiny Turner giving me encouragement when I needed it, a good team spirit running through the whole team lets work hard to maintain this level of commitment to each other. All these things are attributed to the hard work you have been putting in at training thanks to Paul Greenwood for his efforts and all yours. We have to work hard now on our fitness towards the end of the game some of us where feeling the efforts we had out in, hard work on our fitness will pay dividends as the season goes on. Training is on Thursday evenings from 7pm till 9pm, we have been experiencing good numbers lets keep up the effort lads.
The forwards where dominant again in the scrum, and once I got my throwing in on target we started to boss the line out with a superb performance from Schoey and Doc. Another aspect we started to do well was driving over the ball when going in to a ruck, good work from Braddy before the game on highlighting this part of the game it meant we didn't concede penalty's at the breakdown. Also there was some good mauling work done during the second half with Braddy ordering the forwards about and getting the maul moving, a useful tactic we should use more often.
Next week we travel to Hutton, don't forget the fancy dress theme of robbers. We now stand second in the league and I am sure Hutton will give us another hard game. They beat league leaders Orrel this week and will be buoyed by this performance, as usual can you let myself or Keith know your availability as soon as possible. Also the weekend after we play Orrel at Ramsgreave, this will also be a hard game so fitness is the priority. I look forward to leading you all again next week lets keep up the good work we have started,

Regards Carlos ( captain ).

Hard times at Bolton
Hi Guys,
Rugby date 25/9/10 away against Bolton 3 score 17 - 22
This was going to be tough boys all our games this season will be hard fought, I think this league is well balanced with a lot of teams playing a similar style of rugby. The biggest problem we will have this year will be ourselves, we have played 4 games and all of them have had the chance of going either way. The first game was a narrow lose, but should of been a victory but we let ourselves down when it mattered most. Silly penalties are costing us dear, we manage to get ourselves in reach of a win then go in to melt down giving away needless penalty's time after time. Although we may not agree with the referee's decision, once it has been given that's it. I have never known a ref change his mind and I doubt any ref this season will. What we have to do is react quicker our opponents although been beaten by us in some super set play, are playing the ref's better than us and reacting to their decisions way before us. This is leaving us vulnerable at times especially out wide, and the amount of decisions going against us is mounting. We have to work hard on our discipline, and sort out the penalty count to stop leaking unnecessary points.
Keith has written this weeks match report and posted it on pitchero, this means I can use my blog to give my thoughts on this weeks game. As I have already said this was going to be a hard game, and it was brutal at times but the Burn defence although rocked managed to close out a win, With thunderous runs from Martin Jessop and Paul Schofield, and the dogged solid tackling of Andy Snape, Paul Cockram and Micky Cottam, we managed to start well and build a lead. Once again the Burn pack took control at the set piece and was soon putting solid runs up the middle of the pitch. We have learnt the meaning of a good start, but now must eradicate the silly mistakes that mean all the good work we do is been undone. With the forwards once again setting a solid platform our brilliant backs got the chance to show what they can do, a big thanks to Johnny Walmesley coming along and having a run with us. But all our backs are playing well at the moment, looking slick and cutting through oppositions especially Tom Holden, John Whittle and big Nick Archer. Whose game play is faultless giving our quick boys something to run onto, and thundering through tackles.
Our game is good and solid and a lot of that is down to you lot getting to training, and Paul Greenwood's excellent training drills. All I can say is lets keep up this level of commitment, work hard on our week points and put the effort in to every game and the results will come. This week we welcome Hawcoat park to Ramsgreave, they are a bit of a unknown and have a mixed bag up to now. This will be the first time I have played them and would like to show what we can do, as always it will be hard game but one only we can loose. And we must work hard not to give away the game with bad discipline, if we can maintain the effort so far we are a hard team to beat. Having won two lost two Hawcoat are one place behind us in the league. and have managed to beat Bolton and Hutton. If you can let us know your availability as soon as possible, and lets keep up the good work and numbers down training on Thursday 7pm till 9pm. Once again well done to all the players this week another super win, I am proud of the level of commitment shown by all.
Regards Carlos (captain).

A game of two halves

Hi Guys,

Rugby date 18/9/10 home against Thornton Cleveleys 2 score 13-12

Once again another hard battle but as the title says a game of two very different halves, first half kicked of and the Burn players took the challenge straight to the visitors. Applying Pressure from the kick with a superb catch and charge from second row specialist Martin Jessop. With stand off Nick Archer making the most of the wind advantage we soon camped in the visitors half, and the forwards started to assert their dominance at the set piece and break down. Jim Coleman at scrum half again was given a armchair ride from the platform the marauding pack gave. With new boys to the mighty thirds Ben and Adam in the backs giving plenty of pace to back line, Burn pushed hard to pressure the visitors line. But Thornton stood strong for the first 10 minuets with a good defencive effort, however the pressure cooker soon came to the boil with number 8 John Bank crashing over to get the first points for Burn. Nick adding the extras once again. Once again a good catch from the restart saw new boy Allan Clunes have a dart down the line making twenty yards with little effort. Quick ball putting Burn on the front foot and Thornton on the back foot saw our back line cut through the visitors. A penalty awarded straight in front of the posts gave Nick an easy chance at three more points. Thornton restarted once again and hadn't learnt from their previous kicks once again putting the ball straight down our forwards neck. A good ruck ball and then some straight running once again took us deep in to the visitors half. Once again Burn dominating at the breakdown putting Thornton on the back foot and result another penalty and Nick doing the honors. As half time approached Burn looked in control with good discipline and the visitors moaning at the referee.
After a couple of changes at half time seeing the return of old favourite Alf Williams we where ready to kick off, Tom Holden and myself leading the chase and putting the pressure on the Thornton receiver. Burn challenging hard at the breakdown forced the penalty from the visitors. Nick narrowly missing from the kick and Thornton with a bit of open field to run at broke out of their 22. Soon it was the visitors turn to apply some pressure and as Thornton started to take the game to the Burn pack the referee started to turn against the home team. A penalty been awarded against the home team on our 10 yard line saw the first flash of yellow. Alf been deemed to have gone over the top and killing the ball, a funny decision from the ref to bin him as he had only been on the pitch 5 Min's and we had not received any warnings prior. However we where down to 14, and had a lot of defending to do. Thornton pressed hard and where soon camped in our 22 when the ref once again blew his whistle and reached in to his pocket, this time second row P.G. going in the bin again killing the ball. With 13 on the pitch and only 6 forwards Thornton opted for the scrum, but the mighty thirds dug deep and repelled the attack, It was however only a matter of time before the numbers gave the visitors their first score going over as the Burn defence was stretched to far. Thornton missing the extras on this occasion but coming straight back at the Burn defence, which although creaking managed to with stand the battering. The return of Alf buoyed the home team and they where starting to make their way out of their 22 when Martin Jessop deemed to go in high with a charge. the result was yet another yellow and burn down to 13 again. With our two lock forwards languishing in thew bin Thornton opted for a scrum, i think they planned to push us the full 35 yards to our try line. But replacement James Caunce moving to second row with Alf, Andy Snape moving to 8 and Asad myself and Stuart Rouse in the front row we packed down. I don't know who was more surprised us or Thornton but not only did we not move backward we managed to push the visitors scrum of 8 off the ball overturning the scrum. However it wasn't easy for Burn and it wasn't long before Thornton where stretching us again and going over for a second score, this time adding the extras leaving them 1 point behind. As our sinners returned we managed to hold out the visitors as they threw all they had at us, it was a long last 5 minuets but we managed to secure field position and retain the ball to close out the game and pick up yet another win.
I don't think our discipline was at fault this weekend, however you have to adapt to the referee, and we didn't manage the ref particularly well this Saturday. We must improve on our technique and maintain a disciplined line, adapt quickly to the ref and the conditions and stop leaking points and penalty's. This weekend we travel to close rivals Bolton, again this will be a difficult game and I would like as many down training on Thursday as possible. If you can let me or keith know your availability as soon as possible. Also coming up soon on the 9Th of October we travel to Hutton, we will be making the journey as robbers and fancy dress will be compulsory. This is a advance warning we will be having some fun this day and fines will be levied for fun suckers, OK.

Regards Carlos(captain).

Mighty thirds win on the road

Hi Guys,

Rugby date 11/9/10 away against Carnforth score 10-27

Our first away trip saw us make our way up the M6 to Carnforth, a game I looked forward to as the whole team got on so well with our host's last season. It looked as though we would have good numbers for the game also, with the inclusion of John Whittle and Sam O'Dae both making their debut for the third xv. Arriving in plenty of time at Carnforth we made our way out onto the pitch and warmed up, P.G. Leading the team in our stretches. After a couple of runs I thought how good the side looked with some players out of position but adapting to the challenge. Andy Snape starting at centre along side Dave O'Sullivan, a new position for Andy but a good hard combination with Dave both having a good understanding of each other and both being excellent tacklers. With the return of Nick Archer at 10 we looked sharp and quick in the middle of the park. Jim Coleman linking well from forwards to backs at scrum half in the absence of Braddy, Tom Holden on one wing John on the other and young Sam at fullback.
The forwards looked hard and hungry also with a settled front row of Percy, myself and Stuart Rouse, following on from the good work started last week. Second row specialists Martin Jessop and Paul Greenwood, giving a solid foundation in the engine room of the scrum. And a back row of talent with Mike Doherty and George Pugh on the flanks and Paul Cockram at eight we made a formidable pack.
The game started at a pace and both teams stretched the opposition at times but the Burn power at the set piece started to take the edge, forwards setting a solid platform for scrum half Jim to unleash the backs. We looked sharp and were soon mounting the pressure on the host's try line, setting camp in the Carnforth 22. A solid scrum 5 yards out saw us go close, as the front 5 pushed over but a good defence saw Carnforth scrabble the ball away at the back of the scrum. Burn giving away a penalty to relieve some of the pressure on Carnforth, but good work at the line out saw Burn coming up with the ball and quick hands from the backs saw Andy Snape go close. From another line out Mike Doherty doing excellent work at the top got the ball of to Jim with quick hands again through the backs Sam O'dae ducked over for his first try for Burn joining the line from fullback. Nick adding the extras it was hard to believe we had only been playing some ten minutes. More pressure from the Burn team saw us keep the score ticking over with Nick slotting a penalty on the half hour, from the re start we got the squeeze on again Carnforth scrapping for everything in defence. A charge down from P.G. Saw Jim Coleman scoop up the ball and cross the line for our second try. Once again Nick adding the extras, 17-0 at half time and I reminded the team that the job wasn't over, and Carnforth would come back at us. A change at half time saw the return of Matt Briscoe taking over on the wing for John, who had had a great first half for his debut.
It was as I had predicted Carnforth coming back strong from the restart, but some excellent defence kept them at bay, and the forwards dominance in the set piece started once again to role. With us looking dominant changes where made with Kilian Fitzsimmons-Wilson coming on for Stuart Rouse and old favourite Andy Goodwin for Martin Jessop. Unlike the previous week the subtle changes didn't damage the mighty work done by the forwards, and we kept the pressure on the host's. Paul Cockram eager to score made at least a dozen attempts but coming up short due to dodgy markings of the pitch, a point we commented on before the game started after Stuart Rouse had done the same thing last season. Obviously Paul needs to go to specsavers, eventually he crossed the correct line to score our third, and seemed to be pleased with himself. Stuart Came back on for me and Jessy for P.G. Stuart taking over as skipper, but Burn struggled to regain the supremacy they had had, and Carnforth came back at us hard scoring in the 75th minute a couple of quick changes saw myself and P.G. Return to the pitch for the last few minutes. however Carnforth buoyed by their score where hungry for more and took advantage of a penalty to ship the ball wide and score a second. Jim Coleman giving everyone a good kick up the arse under the posts and will be now known as Angry Jim. From the restart I went on a run and catching the kick bulldozed my way up to Carnforth's 22, a bit of confusion and good fortune saw Percy knock on but the ref not give it, and P.G. Playing to the whistle strode over for an easy score. The game ending 27-10 and Burn well worthy of the points.
Next week we welcome Thornton Clevelys to Ramsgreave and look to keep the momentum going, Thornton are currently 2 places behind us in the league but the first game was conceded to them and the second a walk over. This could mean they are hungry to play some rugby and we must be up to the challenge training will be on Thursday evening at 7pm and I hope we can get another good turn out please let myself or team manager Keith Walmsley know your availability as soon as possible.

Helicopter rides at Ramsgreave.

Hi Guys,

Rugby date 4/9/10 home against Wigan score 13-17

The new season kicked off with a tough game at home against old rivals Wigan, it was going to be hot on and off the pitch. With a large turn out of players I was going to have to rotate the squad as much as possible to ensure that everyone got some game time. This would help ease the effects of the humidity on this warm Indian summers day, but I also wanted to maintain a high level of competitiveness.
The game was set to kick off at 3pm but a late request from Wigan to get under way 15 minuets early was put in, we started up front as we meant to carry on with some thunderous tackles from flankers Andy Snape and Mike Doherty. With the experienced heads of John Bank and Richard Bradford at 8 and 9 we had a good platform. The early dominance of the Blackburn pack was clear for all to see, and resulted in Wigan making numerous changes to their front row. However the fast running Wigan backs were proving difficult to contain and only by some hard tackles did we manage to keep them out on several occasions, as the Blackburn pack battled their way up field with the try line looming, indiscipline at the tackle area let the visitors off the hook time and time again. We wasn't the only side caught out by the new understanding of the rules and Wigan gave 2 early penalty chances away, narrowly missed by Kaaber Henning. With half time nearing and the game locked in stale mate it was tense and thrilling but Wigan first to react to the referee penalising Blackburn where soon putting pressure out wide. Wigans fast and pacey backs proving to good for Blackburn and scoring in the corner, the conversion missing.
Blackburn rallied straight from the kick off with myself making a tackle on the Wigan number 1 as he caught the restart, putting him down and turning over the ball. The hungry Burn pack drove on and Wigan conceeding an easy penalty in front of the posts gave Henning another chance at the posts. Unfortunately pushing just wide for the second time the Wigan backs seized there chance. Changing defence into attack they ran the ball from there 22 catching the burn players on the back foot, and scoring their second try of the half. 12-0 at half time I carried out my plan to make some changes and give some of the many subs a run out. However after a initial burst from the burn forwards which saw a smashing bullocking run from second row replacement Martin Jessop, who sent a Wigan defender flying as he crashed through the line of defence. A early penalty chance saw Henning finally put some much deserved points on the board for Burn. The mood soon changed as it was soon apparent that some of the changes had some what weekend the Burn pack and now Wigan where soon on the ascendency and winning quick ball a danger as the Wigan backs lined up to take their chance at the burn line. It wasn't long before the defensive efforts of Burn where broken and Wigan going 17-3 ahead.
The changes had to happen fast as the valiant efforts of front row replacements Andy Grey and James Caunce where put to the sword. Tight head prop Stuart Rouse and myself taking to the field again as the pressure on our replacements deemed to much. Burn had to score quick and where soon charging into the visitors half, a crashing run from myself drove deep into the heart of the visitors 22, setting up a drop goal chance for Henning. From the resulting restart Burn came rushing forward now with the grit firmly between there teeth, Andy Snape crossing the white wash closing the gap, Henning adding the extras 17-13. Burn once again in the ascendency as the clock counted down, a Wigan penalty gave Henning a shot to the corner as burn threatened Wigans defence was tight a second penalty 5 yards out and Burn chose scrum, the pressure was mounting but Wigan somehow managed to keep out Burn. Yet another scrum and you could hear the seconds ticking by on the referee's watch. A shrill blast from the whistle and Burns chances done for as indiscipline gave away a stupid penalty on the visitors try line, the ref already having said last play Wigan kicked to touch.
As we made our way off the pitch I noticed an ambulance on the touchline, it soon came apparent that scrum half Richard Bradford had been hurt in an earlier tackle. Things where looking a little rough as the air ambulance was brought in and Braddy was taken to hospital. Myself and vice captain Paul Greenwood made our way to Blackburn Royal, but on arrival there Braddy was been released after observations had gone well, a clean bill of health thankfully.
All in all the game had gone well and I would like to thank all the players for their efforts, but indiscipline was our down fall and something we must strive to eradicate from our game. There has to be one voice mine talking to the ref, far to many times we put ourselves under pressure by gobbing off to the ref. And although a hard game is what we all want it has to be fair, no cheap shots let the other teams make the mistakes we must capitalise on them.
this week we will travel to Carnforth, yet another good hard game and one I truly enjoy. We have a good relationship with Carnforth and look forward to the challenge, and a good drink afterwards. Please can all players let me know availability as soon as possible also lets keep up the efforts on Thursday night at training keep your eyes on the web site for details.

Mighty thirds Yorkshire three peaks challenge.

Help for Hero's & BRUFC 3rd team.

Hi Guys,
Well many people said it couldn't be done, but yesterday pigs did fly. The walkers supporting the third team, raising money for Help for Hero's and club funds to get the thirds a new strip for next season, congregated on the little sleepy village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The buzz from all the walkers and the support crew was tingling with anticipation. Would everyone make it to the end or even make it over the first peak. There was just time for a quick group photo before the walkers started to disappear.
Finally I was ready to set of big Keith, who was in charge and along with his brilliant wife Pat did most of the organising and ran the check points for us. Made a note of our start time and myself and Paul Cockram set off to the bottom of the first peak Pen-Y-Ghent, Paul still in the army himself was setting a fast pace down the road trying to catch up to the walkers who set off before us. It proved to fast a pace for me and as the climb began Paul was soon vanishing in to the distance, the only contact from then till the end I had with him would come over the walkie talkies he had supplied. A useful tool for giving your mates some banter. As Paul disappeared and I was blowing chunks something kicked in, and a drive and determination to get up the first climb took control of me. I dug in hard got my head down started the climb, up and up I went soon passing some of the walkers from our group. As I went passed a few I managed a couple of words of support and had the crack with them, the banter was all good fun every now and then a voice would crackle over the radio to witch I replied "that's how I know your gay". The peaks where very busy even at this early hour, there was dozens of different charities been supported, with thousands of walkers. As I approached the steepest part of the climb I looked up and the winding line of climbers reminded me of some old biblical movie, with thousands of Israelites climbing into the mountains. I expected to hear some big movie theme with drums rolling, but instead I heard a little old lady about 60 at least, saying "excuse me" as she scampered past me, and sprang up the rough track with the ease of a mountain goat.
Finally I reached the top and stopping to have a drink and something to eat, I took in the beauty of the surrounding country side. The view from Pen-Y-Ghent was truly breathtaking, in the watery morning sun I could see for miles and felt fantastic. I had made my first goal and got to the top of the first peak this was fantastic, a real achievement for me, I hadn't done anything like this in over 20 years. Fully refreshed and re-fueled I found a fellow walker to captcher the moment for me, then started the descent down into Ribblehead and the first check point. feeling so alive I found myself literally running down the hillside, I felt like I was flying at moments passing other walkers with ease. Playing on the I-pod was Beyonce - All the single ladies, the beat of the song really spurring me on. And yes that's how you can tell I'm gay was the comment from Cockram. As I reached flat ground the music changed and Black Betty by Black Sabbeth rang in my ears, once again the beat spurring me on.
I caught up to four of the lads Martin, Chris, Jack and Phil, and we marched into the checkpoint together at Ribblehead Viaduct. Waiting for us was a support group of Pat and Keith, Mike Holden and his family and my daughter Kerrie, all cheering me in. I felt great and was soon sipping a hot cup of sweet tea, and re-stocking my back pack. Mike offered to walk over the second peak, Whernside with me and we where soon on our way. Mike was setting a good pace for me again, and before long we where turning into the steep climb up onto the top of this the highest of the three peaks. Once again this was a different challenge as the long steady climb started to take its toll on my legs, the first stages of a cramp burning into my thigh muscles. I quietly forced myself on determined to make it to the summit hoping that I could walk off the burning pain in my legs, suddenly the ground levelled out and I had reached the second summit and another sit down for some needed fluids and food. Once again I was speechless at the beauty of the scene stretching out before me. Another photo opportunity and then we where ready for the off and the descent down to the second checkpoint at Chapel-Le-Dale. Mike and I had bumped into his eldest son on the top Eddie who was feeling a little sore, it turned out that his undershorts had strangled one of his knackers, I hope no lasting damage Ed. We set off and as the ground fell away into a steep descent I found myself bursting into a jog as the gravitational pull took control. I was soon flying down the second hill of the day and making good time up after a hard climb. Every now and then a message from Paul cracked the silence, as he slagged me off and bragged at how far ahead he was. I reckoned he was now 40 minuets in front of me and ran a little harder, before long I was at the bottom and looking for Keith and Pat and the second checkpoint.
A quick restock and I was on my way again, this time alone, with the news that my daughter Kerrie had decided to climb the second peak with Patrick my mind was worried for her but i had to press on or I would never have finished myself. I soon found myself on what appeared to be a stairway to heaven (not hell) once again the path had been laid with stone flags and they seemed to reach on and on into the distance like a giant scar across the landscape.
Paul was on the radio again asking how far behind i was (cheeky bugger, but that's how I know hes gay) he then asked if i had made it to the climb yet. Having been told that the third peak Ingle borough was the easiest I thought he was being sarcastic when he said it was emotional. Suddenly I came to a sheer wall which obviously was the climb it was soon apparent that i had to scramble up this up this 300 foot vertical face. Halfway up my legs started burning again they both felt on fire as cramp from the groin to the ankle set in every step was painful, I started to realise what Paul meant by emotional as I made the top of this climb almost in tears I looked up and realised there was still more to climb, up and up I went and suddenly burst onto the flat top that was Ingle borough summit a bit of a let down after such an epic climb. Another photo opportunity at the summit marker and my thoughts then turned to the long descent back into Horton-In-Ribblesdale and the finish line. Will Nield arrived at the summit at this point and together we started we started down the hill. This was to be the hardest descent of the three peaks unable to gather any real momentum i plodded steadily down, the pain in my legs had gone and know a burning sensation under my big toes told me i had blister arriving to say hello, i pushed on and once again picked up the banter on the radio that had been so silent over the summit of this hill knowing i was nearing the end spared me forward. I passed a finger post saying Horton 1 1/2 miles overjoyed i carried on 40 minutes later i passed a second finger post saying Horton 1 mile my tourettes burst forward at this cruel joke!!! Over the next mound i saw a familiar face, Paul Cockram had walked back up to meet me knowing now i was near the end i stepped up the pace across the railway, down the hill, over the bridge to the finish line where waiting to greet us was a band of supporters, friends and family led by Pat and Keith the emotion of the whole day becoming to much to hold back, the enormity of the challenge i had completed was overwhelming. My finish time being 9hours, 16minutes was really amazing and the pride i felt was mind blowing. I would like to thank everyone who came to support especially Pat and Keith, i would also like to thank all the walkers who made this day very memorable for all the right reasons. It will stay in my memory for a long, long time and on my feet and in my legs :(.

Hi Guys,

I know its been a while since I last blogged, but with the help for hero's walk coming up soon I thought I'd start letting you know how my training is getting on. Today I went for a walk with my good mate P.G. up over the Darwen moor past the tower. It made me realise how un-prepared I am for this walk, even though I have been putting in loads of boot time it has all been on the roads around Britain not up and down hills and fells. The first thing that really struck me was the icy strong wind, it really was blowing a gail and I had my sun glasses on thinking I was out for a nice bimble across the moor. I soon realised that I am going to be in for a rough time, we did about 8 miles in good time even with a couple of steep climbs. But I did notice that their are a few things I could to help myself along.
Firstly I could make sure that I have a few warm layers with me, and a hat to help keep the heat in and the sun out. A light weight waterproof jacket will also be helpful to keep the wind out and the rain of course. A few pairs of socks to change into and a bag to Carry it all in. The most important thing will be food, jam butties that sort of thing some chocolate or energy bars and of course plenty of fluid. It made me think that 26 miles is a long way never mind going up and the three highest hills in Yorkshire, and I did think why did I volunteer for this I must of been mad. But it is for a good cause and we benefit also by getting a new strip, so I will gird my loins and do my best as I am sure all my fellow walkers will. I just need someone to pull me up the first hill and push my sorry arse up the third. Volunteers.
I hope the rest of you lot who are not walking have sponsored one of the walkers, and if not yet you can pledge to me and I'll put you on my sponsor sheet. As I say we are the beneficiaries and so are the brave lads fighting for our country. So come on give us your support.
I would also like to get some things going on over the summer, to help keep the team spirit going, so if you have any ideas of what we could do let me know. I'd like to have a get together for the world cup games maybe a BBQ or something but where ? so come on guys get your grey matter working and give me some thoughts. This coming season I would like to win the league and go on tour, so lets start the season as we finished last with some good wins and some brilliant team spirit. I will be in touch with details of a tour as soon as I have got something planned.
before I go I would like to remind all of you that Gareth Clarke is getting married on the 19th of June, he has asked me to invite all of you along to the reception at Hollins Grove liberal club in Darwen starting at 4pm. If any of you would like to go and support Gareth and Jenni please let them know on facebook or let me know and I will forward them your details.

Regards Carlos (captain).

Hi Guys,

Rugby date 24/4/10 away against Bae Warton score 6-38

Mighty thirds win at Warton

The thirds took to the field knowing only a win do, with a heavy pack we took it straight to Warton. The scrum working well with the addition of Barclay Roberts at loose head, we hope to see a lot more of Barclay next season. But teamed with Rousie a tight head the front row was like a solid corner of England, impenetrable and rock solid. Warton were pushed off the first 2 scrums of the game as the Burn pack showed its dominance in the set piece, however a neck injury to Warton loose head Rob saw the game reduced to uncontested scrums with Rob taking a early exit. Despite the mighty forward effort it was Warton who had the most territory in this period, as they threw wave after wave of attack at us. But some superb tackling from the Burn players managed to hold them at bay, even though they piled the pressure on.

It was Warton who opened the scoring first though, when number 8 Paul Cockram stumbled leaving his leg hanging and the referee deeming he had attempted to trip the Warton player. Captain Carlos argued his case with the ref but once his decision was given it was final, P.C looking sheepish

Warton taking 3 points from the kick, Burn realised they were in a game both sides wanted to win. And from the restart put their own pressure on the Warton side . With winger Marc Grimes going over in the corner to open Burns account, stand off Eddy Holden narrowly missing the conversion. Roused with this effort Burn started to show their dominance, at the set piece and the break down. Driving in hard at the ruck and the maul, Burn trundling the ball forward some 30 meters in one thunderous maul. With the pressure coming on Warton it was their turn to start giving away penalties, Burn using a set move on a couple of occasions resulting in the rejuvenated Richard Bradford going over next to the up rites after selling on his legendary dummies. Eddy slotting the extras with ease this time, the score 3-12 at half time.

As the second half kicked off it was Warton once again who took the early impetus, with a penalty needless given away in front of the posts. Wartons kicker slotting the 3 pointer with simple effort. But Burn where soon pileing the pressure back on with some excellent line out work from Dr Mike Doherty, leaping like a salmon in the middle of the line. Hooker Carlos find his target and a quick ball of the top sending Burns Backline cutting Warton to bits, and center Joe Holden crossing the white wash. Burns backs teaming up well again and again with Dave O'Sullivan crashing through and making ground time and time again. Not wanting to be out done The forwards also piled on the pressure with number 8 P .C . going over from a scrum five yards out the joy of finally scoring his first try of the season showing on his face.

Young center Joe Holden then gaining his second yellow card of the season, this one for stamping on a players behind. Gave Warton a bit of hope as Burn where down to 14 men, but Burn now running the changes managed to thwart the home teams efforts and put the pressure back on. Scott Foster also enjoying his new lease of life in the forwards having a super game once again taking a knock to the head, but the old stagier keeping his cool and still putting in the big hits. Burn where soon threatening again when Joe came back from the sin bin, just in time to link up with brother Ed and his old man Mike now having a run out for fullback Jim Coleman, giving the scoring pass to his dad for Mike to score, Eddy adding the extras again. The team all cried Holden to Holden to Holden score, then substitution of Mike. With the final whistle looming Burn kept the pressure on pinning Warton deep in their twenty two, while trying to clear their lines Mike Doherty doing what all good open side flankers do charged down the kick and scored the final Burn try.

A fantastic afternoon of rugby played hard and in the true spirit of the game, against a really good Warton outfit we look forward to meeting them again next season. I would also like to thank all the players that made the journey to Warton, and all the supporters. It was a great day out for the Burn third team finished off with a good old drinky. But the job is not yet finished with Wednesdays away fixture at Kirby Lonsdale, this is a game we must play the result doesn't matter. But a win would be nice. We have to play as a cry off would see us out of the league, and that would be a catastrophe after a fine season of hard games. So please could all available players let myself or P.G. know their availability as soon as possible thanks. Also the players dinner is set for the 7th of May please let me know if you intend to go, then i can make sure there is enough places booked. I would like also to thank Keith Walmesley for the excellent photos and appoint him as the third team photographer for next season.

Regards Carlos (captain).
